Across fourteen centuries, from a Visigothic bishop cataloguing the whole of ancient knowledge to a philosopher writing in exile after the Spanish Civil War, one conviction recurs: that the human person must be held whole against every pressure to reduce it. This volume gathers twenty-five figures — theologians and mystics, jurists and scientists, poets, dramatists, and philosophers — whose lives and work trace that conviction as an unbroken thread through the Hispanic intellectual tradition.

Grouped into five thematic movements and read here in fresh, accessible portraits, they make visible a distinctive contribution to the history of human self-understanding: not a school or an ideology, but a characteristic way of thinking about what a person is, and why it matters.

A lo largo de catorce siglos, desde un obispo visigodo que cataloga la totalidad del saber antiguo hasta una filósofa que escribe en el exilio tras la Guerra Civil, se repite una misma convicción: que la persona humana debe sostenerse entera frente a toda presión que la reduzca. Esta obra reúne a veinticinco figuras — teólogos y místicos, juristas y científicos, poetas, dramaturgos y filósofos — cuyas vidas y obras trazan esa convicción como un hilo ininterrumpido a través de la tradición intelectual hispánica.

Agrupadas en cinco movimientos temáticos y presentadas aquí en retratos nuevos y accesibles, hacen visible una aportación singular a la historia de la comprensión que el ser humano tiene de sí mismo: no una escuela ni una ideología, sino un modo característico de pensar qué es una persona, y por qué importa.
